BWD Board 2008 Election/Lottery

Granted that voters in the recent election were offered no real choice among the three candidates for the Borrego Water District board; but the return of the two incumbents only ensures more of the same old plodding, ineffective approach to management of Borrego’s water supply as in the past.

Most voters in the valley, who remain willfully ignorant of Borrego’s precarious water situation, unwittingly act against their own interests when they blindly follow the path of least resistance by electing and re-electing BWD directors who predictably do little or nothing about safekeeping the valley’s water supply.

The tightly bunched election results might be attributed to three equally qualified candidates.  Making no assumptions about the level of their common qualifications, that is a possibility.

The result, however, also can be explained by assuming that most voters neither knew nor cared about what is required to be a successful BWD director or the candidates’ individual ability and willingness to meet those requirements, and so just cast their ballots randomly.  The make-up of BWD boards in the recent past argues strongly for the latter interpretation.

Borrego can no longer afford such a cavalier approach to selecting those who will determine the fate of the community and the resulting helter-skelter, inept approach to managing its most precious resource.  It is time voters took seriously their duty to elect responsible stewards.
